An innovative study from the HBSC Canada team used google earth mapping software to measure the length of sidewalks, concluding sidewalks in rural areas were shorter. The measurement protocol may be used for research, urban planning and public health settings. It is hoped that the methodology may be used in further research to test the relationship between the length of sidewalks and the environmental determinants of walking behaviour. This may then be used to identify safe walking routes to encourage school-aged children to walk to school.
