Survey Data

NSD logo

As outlined in the Overview, an international datafile is created from all national data for each HBSC survey and stored at the Norwegian Social Science Data Services (NSD).

The HBSC Data Manager is Professor Oddrun Samdal of the University of Bergen.

The international datafile is restricted for the use of HBSC member country teams for a period of three years from its completion. After this time, the data is available for external use by agreement with the HBSC International Coordinator and the Principal Investigators. HBSC’s policies on data access are outlined below.

Requests for HBSC data from the following surveys are now available: 1985/86, 1989/90, 1993/94, 1997/98, 2001/02, 2005/06

Data Access Policy

The HBSC Network is committed to increasing transparency in its work whilst preserving their intellectual property. It is important to note that the HBSC Network only grant requests for data under the following conditions:

  • HBSC data is given only to academics, international organisations, and public sector researchers working in relevant fields. Under no circumstances will the data be provided for the purposes of commercial interests.
  • Access to the data is only given for specific mandatory variables and not the entire dataset from any survey. Special requests for the entire dataset may be made but these will only be approved following a majority vote of the HBSC Network Assembly.
  • All requests for access to data must be approved by the HBSC International Coordinator, HBSC Data Manager and relevant HBSC Network groups. Please note, this process can be lengthy in some instances.
  • In order to publish any work using HBSC data, at least one member of the HBSC Network must be a named author or have a consultative role in the publication and/or analyses.

How to request access to survey data

Please note, data requests from external researchers for the 2009/10 HBSC Survey will be accepted from 1st of October 2014.

If you wish to request access to the 2005/06 HBSC datafile or earlier survey data, please download and complete the HBSC Data Request Form [Word 175KB].

In order to better process your request, please refer to the list of the variables from your requested dataset. The variable lists from the last three accessible HBSC survey cycles are as follows: 1997/98 [PDF 38KB], 2001/02 [PDF 38KB] and 2005/06 [PDF 36KB]. Variable lists from the 1985/86, 1989/90, 1993/94 surveys are also available upon request and will be made available online in the upcoming months.

Please state the variable name and variable label that you are interested in using on Section 3 of the HBSC Data Request Form [Word 175KB]. The list of variables requested should only include the variables needed to address your specific research questions. For further information on HBSC survey years, go to the HBSC Countries page.

Please note that Word and PDF versions of all the documents are also found below.
