HBSC 2021/22 international data to become openly accessible on 31 October

International data from the 2021/22 Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) survey will become available through open access on 31 October 2026, providing researchers and other interested users with an opportunity to explore adolescent health and well-being across countries and regions.

The release covers data collected through the mandatory questions in the 2021/22 survey, which gathered information from 11-, 13- and 15-year-olds on their health, health behaviours and social environments. These include topics such as mental well-being, physical activity, eating habits, family relationships and school experiences.

An established commitment to data sharing

HBSC makes international survey data available to the wider research community as part of its regular four-year survey cycle. Following an initial three-year period during which the international datafile is reserved for HBSC member country teams, data from the mandatory survey questions are released through open access.

The 2021/22 release continues this established approach, supporting the wider use of HBSC data for scientific research and evidence-informed policy development.

Researchers will be able to request individual-level survey data, known as microdata, to undertake further analyses, explore differences between population groups and compare adolescent health and well-being across participating countries and regions.

The open-access release covers mandatory survey variables and does not include data collected through optional questionnaire packages.

Accessing the data

The data will be available through the HBSC Data Management Centre at the University of Bergen, Norway.
